In an intensive discourse, Fraunhofer has analyzed current macro trends and identified fields of research that will play a particularly important role in the future in meeting challenges such as climate change, dwindling resources and preventive healthcare. Fraunhofer intends to actively contribute to these solutions with its twelve frontline themes, investing its own resources in preliminary research and cross-linking its distributed skills to facilitate the interface to industry.
One of the frontline themes identified is visual analytics. This new discipline combines automatic data analysis with novel visualization techniques, thus making the best possible use of the different abilities of man and computer. The computers task is to sequentially process large volumes of data and convert them into a visual form of representation that people can perceive and understand. The user can then focus on recognizing patterns, and evaluating and analyzing the observed data. This makes it easier to make the right decisions quickly.
